About us
Our History
A congregation organized itself as Shepherd of the Plains in 1975, initially meeting in homes and later a bank building. After acquiring the property at 73rd and Frankford, the congregation met initially in portable buildings during the construction of the current building, containing a chapel and fellowship hall.
At that time, southwest Lubbock was still mostly cotton fields, and in those early days members would sometimes have to shovel sand away from the west-facing entrance doors. The congregation has been served by a number of faithful pastors over the years, and in 2019 expanded its fellowship hall and kitchen to serve our growing needs.
Our Pastor – Joseph Kasper
I was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, but only spent a little bit of time there before my family moved to Georgia. I spent most of my formative years outside of Atlanta in Suwanee. While there, I started to consider the possibility of going into the public ministry.
After high school, I headed to New Ulm, Minnesota for college. I studied Biblical languages at Martin Luther College and graduated with my BA in 2018. While there, I also got to do several plays. It’s through those plays that I met my wife, Jazzmin.
After graduating, I continued my studies at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon. With two years of study under my belt, Jazzmin and I got married and then moved to Schofield, WI for my internship at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Once that year was finished, I had one final year of studying in the classroom and then graduated from the Seminary in 2022.
I was assigned to Shepherd of the Plains Lutheran Church in 2022. This is my first full-time call and I’m excited to explore the opportunities to spread Christ in the Lubbock community. I look forward to meeting you!
